Things to check before buying a laptop are

For what type of work you will use your laptop.

If you want for general office work , daily mails and Multi-Media and for home.

  • 8GB ram if you do hardcore multitasking you can go with 16 GB of ram.
  • Core i3 / Ryzen 3 processor latest generation processor.
  • Good battery life.
  • Good speaker output.
  • Backlit keyboard will be better.
  • Good display.

These specs will support your work easily and runs smoothly. Depending on your budget you can go with premium or entry level laptops.

For students :

  • 8 GB ram if you do video editing and hardcore multitasking you can go with 16 GB of ram.
  • Intel core i5/Ryzen 5 – Go with latest  generation processor.
  • If your budget is not sufficient for above processors go with 8 GB ram.
  • Good battery life.
  • Backlit keyboard will be better. It helps while coding at night.
  • Good display.
  • Good speaker output.
  • Graphics card like Nvidia MX250 or MX350 will be better, if you use any mid level graphic intensive apps. like Photoshop.
  • If you are a student who works with animations using softwares like blender and some programmers also require graphic cards. Then just opt for good gaming. Because these applications require both CPU and GPU with good thermal performance which can be achieved better in gaming laptops.

For gaming laptops :

  • Go with minimum Nvidia GTX1650 or amd Radeon graphics card.
  • Go with good refresh rate and high frame rate tn panel,if not normal ips display. But these days we are getting high refresh rate ips panels also. IPS panels are better than tn panels in viewing angles and display quality. As they have better colour quality due to wide colour gamut than tn panels.
  • There must be good cooling because it should not throttle due heating.
  • Good keyboard experience.
  • Don’t go with battery stats on gaming laptops because they are gaming laptops.

These are some of the specs you should check for in a laptop apart from specifications :

  • Now-a-days 1080p display is standard. So go with a 1080p display. If you are a content creator/graphic designer then you can go with 4k display also. As you get more pixels and a better color accuracy.
  • Go with current gen processor(latest) whatever processor like Core i3,i5, Ryzen 3 etc.
  • Warranty-but I don’t care about it .
  • Good & bright display because we may use it outside under sun.
  • Good cooling (if it is possible to check).
  • A fingerprint reader or with any windows hello security – must if your budget is above ₹50K OR 800$
  • If possible go with an SSD model. At least for operating system.
  • If your budget is above ₹50k or 600$ go with backlit keyboard.
  • Check it has all the ports you want (it depends on budget also and other requirements).
  • Check battery life also. There are many reviews on every laptop on YouTube don’t forget to check them.
  • Go with IPS panel because they have good viewing angles and wide colour gamut. If you are a gamer then you might get VA panel in some cases,it is also fine. But these days most of the laptops are coming with IPS panel.
  • Select the ram size according to your multitasking usage.Minimum 8GB ram will be good and in future 4GB might create bottleneck issues.

You can’t get all these features in every laptop model. Try to select a laptop with most of these features and these features will also depend upon the pricing of the laptops and for what purpose you are going to use it. If you go with a laptop with these things you can easily use it for 3–5 years(hope you are taking good care).
